I want to be a Doctor

Have you read Zog by Julia Donaldson? Its a lovely book about a dragon that ends up working as a flying ambulance. The Boy loves this book, so much so that for the past few months he keeps telling us that when he grows up he wants to be a doctor. Of course I am chuffed with this and would like to start training him for his career straight away. Imagine my delight when the fantastic When I Was A Kid sent us the John Crane General Hospital to review. Oh, and the Boy was a bit excited too.

First impressions

It is a well made wooden toyย of lovely smooth wood with some nice splashes of colour. The piece on the left (with the helipad on top) was flat packed and needed to be constructed but it took about 15 minutes and was very simple. All of the pieces are simply made with only a few fiddly bits which makes it ideal for chunky toddler fingers. There are some lovely different hospital parts included such as a pharmacy, a physiotherapy bar and a surgeons table (which is what I am really pushing the Boy towards) but we did need to read the box to know what some of them were!

Road testing

Because it is such a large toy with so many parts it gives the Boy lots of options for imaginative play. Broken bones, banged heads and feet that have fallen off were all treated in his hospital and his bedside manner is lovely. All of the wooden parts are really well made and fit nicely in the hospital. The people are great with real clothes and pretend hair and their limbs are very maneuverable, the only downside to them is that they do not always stand up very easily so this is something I would like to see improved on. The hospital has a lift which moves up and down using a hand crank which is a nice addition but probably something for a slightly older child as the Boy couldn’t really move it himself. Other furniture included are lovely little pillows and bed covers, bedside tables, IV holders, medical equipment table and a surgeons light.ย

The paramedic kit which includes two paramedics and an air ambulance is a fun addition which means you can airlift passengers in, although the functionality of it is not great as no one can really fit into it, but the Boy enjoyed flying it around and landing it on the helipad.

Conclusions

  • Really well made wooden toy using lovely smooth wood and nice material for the bed covers and clothes.
  • Easy to assemble with lots of pieces for imaginative play
  • Nice bright colours
  • There is no back wall to the hospital so things do fall out which can be frustrating
  • The people don’t always stand up but are quite flexible
  • As there are two parts the Boy enjoyed playing with it with a friend and there was enough room for both of them to enjoy it
  • A great alternative to a traditional dolls house

The Boy really enjoys playing with his “hospical” and the Man and I love it as he is happy to spend time in his room each morning playing with it. It is an expensive purchase (ยฃ79) but given the size of it and the different ways it can be played with I think it is a good investment. I expect that this will keep the Boy occupied for some time yet and the quality of the product should last a long time. I was provided with this toy to review but as always, all opinions are our own.

    • He does enjoy it and he mixes his toys with it to create new ones, the other day we had a hospital train running to and from the different parts!

  4. “Feet that have fallen off” made me giggle. I just love how kids think that any problem – or missing limb – is so easily fixed!

  6. Wow what a fab toy. I think I would be able to play with that or hours, never mind the little one!

Love the video, he looks like he is having a great time!

    • Thats why he loves it, he was coveting a dolls house and he wants to be a doctor so this was the perfect combo! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Fab review of a fab product. John Crane always come up with lovely goodies. We have the pink John Crane dolls house which is brilliant for the girls but the hospital makes a fabulous unisex alternative. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. this looks great, it’s nice that john crane has made some dolls house type toys for boys AND girls. we could play things like ‘that time you ended up in casualty’ or ‘the time mummy cracked her head open’ and other such real life accident and emergency scenarios.

  9. That looks fantastic, bigger than I expected though (good thing). It’s all about imagination here. Fab review ๐Ÿ™‚
